In recent months, there’s been a sharp rise in Facebook account hacking cases — not just globally, but here in Uganda and across Africa. Many people wake up to find their Facebook accounts posting strange links, sending spam messages, or worse — completely disabled for “suspicious activity.” It happened to me several times and since I am not a social media kinda person, I always gave up my Facebook accounts. Some accounts I had had for a very long time (years) and some I even didn’t care about.

It came to a time when regardless of my Facebook account name, I would still be hacked. I got mad. A time came when my name was banned. No new Facebook account could be created with my name in it. Cleared everything eventually but it took a very long while. This got to me and broke me big time.

The scary part? Most of these hacks do not affect the Main Facebook account. This is a very big problem since you may not even know you are Hacked. Many Facebook account hacks are connected to fake pages and Instagram accounts that are linked behind the scenes. Once your account is flagged, Facebook may suspend it for review, making recovery a real struggle. Sometimes you don’t even get lucky enough and can get your account blocked for good.

In this article, we’ll show you how you recover your hacked Facebook account, the best security settings to enable, and how to prevent it from ever happening again.

1. How to Recover a Hacked Facebook Account

If your Facebook account has been hacked or disabled, don’t panic — try to follow these steps carefully.

1. Use Facebook’s Official Recovery Page

Go to  facebook.com/hacked.
This is the safest and fastest way to start recovery. Facebook will ask questions to verify your identity and walk you through resetting your login details. Before you attempt anything, start here.

2. Reset Your Password

If you still have access to your email or phone number, select “Forgot Password” on the login page. Reset your account using a strong new password — avoid reusing old ones. Avoid using similar pass-phrases or the common words. Common words vary per individual and some of these include you name, date_of_birth, children’s names,  spouse details.

3. Check for Suspicious Connections

After recovery, visit your Settings → Security → Apps and Websites and remove any unfamiliar apps, pages, or connected Instagram accounts.

4. Report the Incident

If your account has been used for scams or spam, report it using Facebook’s Help Center. This helps protect your friends and prevent further misuse.

2. Strengthen Your Facebook Security (2025 Tips)

Even if you haven’t been hacked, it’s wise to secure your account right now. And these little steps can help.

1. Turn On Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)
   Go to Settings → Security → Two-Factor Authentication. Choose either SMS or an Authenticator app. This adds a powerful layer of protection. You may need a subscription for the sms option but the Authenticator app is free.

2. Review your Active Devices
   In Settings → Security → Where You’re Logged In, you can see all devices using your account. Log out of any that you don’t recognize. The best option is to logout all devices except the current device.
   
   CAUTION: Don’t do this on an unfamiliar device as this will further compromise security. Always be careful where you login. The devices you login on and keep active are very crucial in the case your account ever gets compromised.

3. Update Your Recovery Details
   Make sure your recovery details for example your email and phone number are valid and accessible. These are critical for account recovery. Fill out as much information as possible. Do not leave options blank unless you don’t have them. These are your fall back position incase of an attack

4. Avoid Phishing Links
   Links are a very good option for sharing and accessing information. You don’t need to click on all links you encounter. Links are not to be trusted because they come from a familiar account. Every account is susceptible to hacks. Never click on messages offering free followers, rewards, or verification badges. Most are scams designed to steal your login info. Through these links many people have rendered their accounts vulnerable.

5. Use a Strong, Unique Password
   Mix uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Avoid using your name, birthday, or common words. I have always recommended LastPass for generating passwords. This helps me generate un-intelligible passwords and these will always pass dictionary attacks. Having a long password (14 – 18 characters) makes it more difficult for hackers since it takes longer for password hashing algorithms to break the password

3. Prevent Future Hacks

Once you’re secure, stay that way. Do everything right and monitor ever process. 

• Check Page Roles Regularly:
  If you manage a Facebook Page, remove unknown administrators. Hackers often hide behind page roles. Some hackers add special roles to hacker accounts and keep posting using them and hence affecting your account.
  
  
  
  
• Protect Your Instagram Account:
  Since Facebook and Instagram are connected, a hack on one can affect the other. Turn on 2FA for both. It is very important to link your accounts and heavily secure them all. Whatsapp has an option of Linking WhatsApp and Instagram and that could affect you if you have not secured one of them. Add multiple layers of security to Both. Keep up with Meta’s latest security updates. New threats emerge often — staying alert is your best defense.
  

4. Delete the unwanted Hacker Pages

1. We always start at Heading to facebook.com and login to your account. 
2. Click on your profile picture and a menu will drop down showing your account and pages linked to your account.
   
   
3. Select the account or page that you need to remove or any page that you do not recognise or even understand. <I am going to select `Legal Wellmade` Account>. Tap the Profile photo and select Settings & privacy
   
4. Select the settings option in the next step
   
   
5. In the Settings screen. We are to select the `Access and Control` option. This will then take you to a page where you can delete the page.
   
6. The next steps: Select the `Delete Page` option and click on Continue. You will be prompted on whether or not you want to download page information or transfer it elsewhere. Since these are spam pages, you don’t need to select this option.
   Finally: A prompt to confirm page ownership will come up. This will require page password. Because the page is created under your account. It will use you user Password.
   
7. Next you will confirm Page deletion.
   
   
8. Here after pressing the delete button. You will be logged out. Repeat steps a – g for the remaining pages. And you’re done. Incase you delete a page you wanna keep accidentally, just head over to pages and recover it
   

5. Bonus: Protecting Your Digital Identity in Uganda

Cybersecurity awareness in Uganda is growing, but so are online scams. Whether you’re running a business page, a personal account, or managing ads, always keep your login details private and never share them with anyone claiming to be “Facebook Support.”

You can also register your accounts with Meta’s Business Suite for extra recovery options and professional security controls.

Final Thoughts

Recovering a hacked Facebook account can be stressful — but it’s possible. By using Facebook’s official recovery tools, strengthening your password, and activating two-factor authentication, you can take control again and stay protected.

In 2025, digital safety isn’t optional — it’s essential. Stay alert, secure your data, and help others learn to do the same.

I was supposed to be there.
I had prepared. I had prayed. I had dreamed.
But I’m not there.
I’m home in Uganda, holding a visa rejection letter and nursing a deep sense of disappointment. Rejection.

The Build-Up

When I received the invitation to WordCamp, I was overjoyed. This was more than just a tech conference — it was a chance to be physically present in a community I’ve served and loved from behind a screen for years.The Letter announcing sponsorship was more exciting than fulfilling. I was on top of the world. Like an avenger, I felt unstoppable.

I spent days gathering documents, writing letters, and ensuring every requirement was met. I told everyone I will see them in Basel, my fellow contributors on the various WordPress teams that I am a member or mentee. Everyone that I have longed to have a conversation with. Matt,all excited to see him in person, discuss the WordPress and OpenSource project… When I remembered my WordCamp Nairobi 2024 Experience and the articles that followed

But all of that came crashing down with one short decision from the embassy: Visa Denied.

There was no time to appeal. No conversation. Just a missed opportunity and an empty seat where I should have been. Next up was Cancelling flight tickets, accommodation, trip itinerary among others.

The Aftermath

The emotional toll of a visa rejection is not just about the logistics — it’s about identity and belonging.

I kept asking myself:

• Did I not try hard enough?
• Was something wrong with me or my application?
• Why is it so difficult for people like me to access global spaces?
• Is it because I am from Uganda???
  

And then, as photos from WordCamp started to appear online — smiling faces, contributor teams, group selfies — it hit even harder. It felt like watching a family gathering you weren’t invited to, even though you helped set the table.

A Pain Shared by Many

Sadly, I know I’m not alone. Many talented individuals from Uganda and Africa face these challenges. We prepare, we hope, we pray — only to be stopped at a gate we didn’t build and can’t open ourselves.

It’s a quiet kind of pain — one that’s rarely talked about, but deeply felt. The system doesn’t just deny travel; it denies moments, memories, and the validation of being seen and valued.

Still a Contributor

Despite the rejection, my purpose remains unchanged.

Contributing to WordPress is not bound by geography. It happens in code commits, forum replies, translation strings, documentation, and the encouragement we give one another online. So today, while I’m not at WordCamp in person, I’m still part of the Contributor Day spirit — from Uganda. My heart is there, even if my feet aren’t. I contributed strings to translation. Contributed to the Community Team as I always do. Painfully but diligently

To Those Still Fighting

To anyone reading this who’s ever been denied a visa, overlooked because of where they live, or made to feel like they don’t belong — I see you. You matter. You still have a place in this community.

Don’t give up.

Keep building. Keep applying. Keep showing up however you can — online, in forums, in your local meetups. Because contribution isn’t defined by borders.

This Is Not the End

I believe my time will come. I’ll keep preparing. I’ll keep contributing. And when that visa finally arrives, I’ll walk into WordCamp not just as a participant, but as someone who never gave up.

The Care Fund was created to reward individuals who contribute to WordPress in meaningful but often under-recognized ways — such as community building, documentation, accessibility, translations, and advocacy. Being selected as a recipient is not just an award — it’s a signal that our work matters. It shows that building communities, mentoring others, and making WordPress accessible are just as vital as writing code.

My Journey in the WordPress Community

My name is Moses Cursor Ssebunya, and I proudly call Mukono – Uganda, my home. My journey into WordPress began out of necessity — to build websites and empower local businesses and in so doing earn a living for myself. But what started as a tool quickly became a passion and a purpose. I found something I loved.

Eventually, I founded Cursor Technologies — not just to deliver services but to train, mentor, and uplift young Ugandans through digital skills. With Cursor Technologies we’ve hosted workshops, Meetups, and created a growing community of aspiring developers, writers, and digital entrepreneurs. This later developed into MoCursor the trainer, speaker, mentor, organizer, supporter among all other things.

From Mukono to the World

One of my proudest milestones has been organizing the Mukono WordPress Meetup. We began with just a few passionate individuals, and today, our meetups regularly bring together students, freelancers, bloggers, business owners, and tech enthusiasts both physically and online.

Translating WordPress for Greater Impact

I have had the honor of translating WordPress into Luganda and Kiswahili. Language should never be a barrier to participation. Localization opens doors and empowers more people to learn, create, and contribute. Yoast’s recognition of this work shows that translations are not just about words — they are about inclusivity and global access.

The Power of Representation

Being listed among the core contributors for WordPress 6.7 during the State of the Word was another proud moment. Seeing “Uganda” represented on that list reminded me of how far we’ve come — and how much further we can go. Representation matters. It inspires others to believe in their own potential and step up to contribute too.

Community Events & Collaborations

My journey has also taken me beyond Mukono. I’ve contributed to:

• WordCamp Mukono 2025 – as the Lead organizer and community team leader. Working with a great team ensuring all blindspots are covered and hence giving us a bright event

What’s Next?

This award is not an end but a beginning. With the support of the Yoast Care Fund, I plan to:

Expand our WordPress meetups into more towns and rural areas and ensure satisfaction of all attendees. We are focusing on more topics and more contributions. Launch a community translation initiative for themes and plugins. Also pushing the Luganda and Swahili translations further. Targeting is hitting 100% translations

Creating free e-learning resources tailored to East African learners sprouting from Uganda and spreading all over. Making WordPress resources that are easily accessible to have more people come onboard. Mentor underrepresented groups in tech, especially young women and youths.

Contribute more actively to WordPress core, Training, Polyglots, Photos, Community and documentation

So these are some of the things you can do and a number of places you can visit, and listed below are some of the costs you’ll have to make.

      a) Pricing Disclaimer

All the costs given here are in Uganda Shillings with US Dollar translations and will include Kenya Shillings conversions once we cross to Kenya or where applicable. This is to help us compute properly. Come count with me

1. Transport

• Bus

If you’re going to use the buses, you’re going to spend a hundred thousand (100k UGX or $26) on your Journey to Nairobi; you’re also going to spend another hundred thousand Uganda shillings (100k UGX or $26) on your Journey from Nairobi. So that means that’s UGX 200,000 (200k UGX or $52) to go and come back. Nairobi.

• Motor Bike (Bajaj, TVS, Hero, Mahindra, e.t.c)

There’s an Option of Using a motorbike. This could be cheap in theory but will match up the cost in the long run. Eventually this amount will be accounted for in the Bike service, Tire changes, Lodging, Oil and Fueling. The cost of Using the Motor bike will actually be more. In order to avoid double costs you will have to start your journey early in the morning to avoid night riding as it may not be safe

Just so you know I am not lying, Bike fuel will be around UGX 150,000 for both Journeys. Oil change at the border or shortly after crossing UGX 10,000. Several stops so the bike engine can cool may cost you a refreshment. This could go up to UGX 20,000. If your bike tires are new then you may not feel the journey since bike tires cover an estimate of 3000 to 5000 kilometers and the whole jurney will be around 1400 kilometers. The tiredness from covering 700km in 12hours can milk your spirit. The boredom of riding a long distance alone is a story for another day.

• Flights (Like Seriously!!!)

If you are planning on flying, probably the plane ticket is going to cost you around 350 to 600 Us dollars (1.3 million to 2.3 million Uganda Shillings) which is already above our budget. This is also greatly depending on where you are and also depending on the flight you take. Flight classes range from economy business class or VIP. If you are in this Category, I am sorry to inform you that this article has beneficial facts that could benefit you but are not for you. Read on to know the places you can visit in Nairobi and how much money you could probably spend for each.

If you are still on a one million budget. This is article was made specifically for you. You’re going to take the buses from Kampala to Nairobi and Back.

2. Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate

You will need a yellow fever card. I believe you already have this. And if you do not have one because we are time-bad, you can quickly run to Nakasero General Hospital and get the Vaccination.  The injection goes for only UGX 80,000. However, if you want an excellent and speedy service, you might need to spend around UGX 100,000. But the cost is 80,000 for both Vaccination and card.

So if you have your yellow fever card, I trust you have been vaccinated against COVID-19. It is not a requirement but sometimes you might need it.

And in some places you will still be asked to maintain your social distance and also asked to still present your certificate of vaccination. To some countries. They are even asking for a vaccine boosters but luckily for the East African Community, you don’t need this. I am trying to keep this as simple as possible, so I’m going to cover only the requirements

3. Accommodation

So before you reach Nairobi, the first thing that I want you to plan for is your accommodation this is very, very important. Accommodation is mainly important. because you’re going to need a place to stay before you get out to go elsewhere. You will also need a place to stay for the night.

• Air BnB or Booking.com

An AirBnB or Booking.com service is a service that helps you get accommodation online basing on the place you want. These services are similar and preferably the most common. For these services people choose to rent out their homes or rooms so that other people can use them at a fee. Some will leave you the place to yourself and others will be shared with the host or other guests. You always choose what suits you.

So booking a place will cost you between $50 to $80 (UGX 180k to UGX 300k – using the k to denote the thousand (000)) for the four days. There are places that bill as much as $400 depending on your budget and your preference and we have very many places you can go to that are in our range and even beyond. However, we said we won’t be spending luxuriously. Just enough to have great fun and surprisingly these places will be available. You can cook, you can have ready-made meals, and many other alternatives.

So we are not going to capitalize on places that are very expensive. We are going to look at places that are close to the WordCamp Nairobi 2024 venue. So we are going to invest a lot of time. In finding areas around Daystar University Nairobi campus and we are also going to put a lot of attention on areas that are comfortable and affordable. We have rooms that we can pay for $20 a night or even $15 a night and some of these even accommodate up to two people.

This simply means that if you came with your wife or if you traveled as a couple, This could still help you imagine paying $20 for two. Okay, so if we pay $70 for the three nights, we are aiming at staying for 3 nights as the fourth day is a travel day. That means we only pay for three.

You can choose a hotel and pay for a full board, you know. Just to keep it fancy. Okay, so once you have paid, we have so far covered. $132 (UGX 500K).

Having confirmed our accommodation, we go ahead and start planning the fun part. We are going to be touring and also attending WordCamp Nairobi 2024 at Daystar University, Nairobi Campus. Remember this is for people going for the WordCamp. However If you are not attending the WordCamp then you just need to cut out the WordCamp plan and still have great fun.

The Journey to Nairobi Starts

So this is what you will do, take a bus in the night that reaches Nairobi early in the morning, And you will go to the place you booked so you can refresh. Bus journeys can be exhausting so you may need a shower and an hour of washing off. Most places check in at 10am. As you wait for your check-in time you could get a place to sit and have breakfast, buy a sim card in case you haven’t already, buy a data bundle. This is under ideal situations. Under normal circumstances, eat breakfast and start the touring.

Day 1

After reaching Nairobi and having the cool off we start the tour. I’ve compiled a list of places in a nice order to visit them so as to have great fun while we save a lot of time. So these are some of the places that I thought about:

1. Nairobi National Park.

The first place to visit is the Nairobi National Park. Here we shall be charged an entry fee of  500 Kenya Shillings (15,000 Uganda Shillings). The Nairobi National Park is the only pack in the world that is within a city so it is a very beautiful place to go.

We are going to experience Wildlife Safari that is just a few minutes from Nairobi center. And here we are going to see lions. We shall see rhinos, zebras and many more. This is best to do very early in the morning and also late afternoon. So we are planning it for day one so as to give us value for money .

TIP: If you can make a group of 10, you can bundle up and pay around 5k Kenya Shillings (150,000 Uganda Shillings) for a group of 10 and be given a game drive. Which is an extra 500 Kenya shilliings (15,000 Uganda Shillings)

There is also an extra fee upon request – UGX 52,000 for a tour guide up to 4 hours. Still if you divide this into the 10 people in the group it gets to about UGX 5,100 which is still pretty affordable

2. David Sheldrick Wildlife trust

The next place to visit will be the David Sheldrick Wildlife trust which is also found inside the Nairobi National Park. This is where we find the sanctuary for orphaned elephants. Here we are going to see a variety of elephants that most are orphaned. We are also going to see baby elephants being cared for, being fed, being trained, entry $20 or the Kenya Shillings equivalent basing on the day’s rate which roughly translates to 75,000 Uganda Shillings

The trust is open to visitors on appointment only. Cash is paid upon arrival before entry. It is advised to book a week or two early as the response for confirmation of booking may take some time to come. So this largely means we have to book early. We can only book via contact form on the website. We can also a friend to help us book since entry is limited to bookings only. Remember to carry your booking slip.

Safety Tip: Avoid loud noises when you are in this place for you to have fun. Because elephants are scared by loud sounds. So, because of their sensitivity, especially during feeding and for fear of being asked to step out keep the sounds low when instructed.

3. Nairobi Giraffe Center

Another beautiful place to visit is the Nairobi Giraffe Center. This as our number three can be very exciting. We are not planning on spending al ot of time at a given place. The Math is an hour or hour and a half. You can have this as a surprise for your loved one. I am assuring you, it will give you great value for money.

So the giraffe Center only charges you 400 Kenya Shillings (12,000 Uganda Shillings) for citizens of the East African Community. It’s a popular spot and with the 12,000 they’ll give you something small that you’ll feed the giraffes with. The giraffe center of Nairobi is a home for the endangered Rothschild giraffes. This is a very beautiful species of giraffes that is good to look at and it has been endangered. So this place was built as a reserve. It is very good. If you come into this place early  in the day,

Safety Tip: Have your food hidden carefully away because giraffes like feeding, they’re like monkeys when they see food I’m telling you, trust me they’re going to run for your bag. This species is also delicate when it comes to feeding so we are advised to keep our food away. You’ll been given special food to feed the giraffes with. Don’t scare them and don’t be scared. They love feeding from the hand.

4. Karen Blixen Museum

Another place that we can visit is the Karen Blixen Museum. This one is only 200 Kenya Shillings (6,000 UGX). As a Ugandan yo will be charged 600 Kenya Shillings (18,000). This was as at my last visit. Currently with the regulations from the National Museums of Kenya. Prices may change slightly.

The Karen Blixen museum is very historical and it is the former home of the famous author of the Out of Africa Karen Blixen. It is set in large Gardens and provides an insight into the colonial era of Kenya. So if you want to see things about the colonial Kenya, this is the place for you. It is beautiful. The best times to visit here is towards the evening before the place closes, Place closes at 5:30.

5. Kazuri Beads Women Cooperative

The next beautiful place is the Kazuri Beads Women Co-operative. Tour this factory where local women create beautiful ceramic beads and pottery by hand. Support local artisans by purchasing unique pieces. Entrance is free, and there’s a lot of things that you might need to buy and trust me. So, it’s free entry and beautiful.

They are handmade souvenirs and they can make it a very rewarding stop.

6. The Bomas of Kenya

I have no better rewarding day closing ceremony other than the Bomas of Kenya. BOMAS of Kenya has an enviable MICE facility in a quiet and serene setting. Experience Kenya’s rich cultural diversity through live performances of traditional music and dances from various tribes, along with exhibits of traditional homesteads. It is advised to get here a bit early before the performances start so you can visit the homesteads.  Entry to the facility is just 600KES (18,000 Ugandan Shillings) and everything will be unveiled.

I think that will be very beautiful. After these six places, I’m assuming you’ve given an hour, an hour and a half for each place and we have so far spent only 600 000 ($160).

Day 2 & 3

7. WORDCAMP Nairobi 2024

From Here we go to the Flagship Event. The long awaited, the Creme de la creme´, WordCamp Nairobi 2014. what more should I say?

WordCamps are informal, community-organized events that are put together by WordPress users like you and I. Everyone from casual users to core developers participate, share ideas, and get to know each other.

This year WordCamp Nairobi is Hosted at Daystar University, Nairobi Campus. The Venue is Beautiful, calm and pleasant. The Floral compound and entrance says it all. This year’s WordCamp will erase all the previous events in Nairobi and Africa as a whole.

The Event (WordCamp Nairobi 2024) ticket is 1,500 Kenya Shillings (50,000 Uganda Shillings or $15). Please be advised that the ticket is paid in advance. You may not be able to pay for tickets at the entrance. Yes, I understand as Ugandans we love paying at the entrance. Unfortunately for purposes of a great event gate pass tickets will not be available. So, after Saturday, we can get a place to chill in the evening Just for that evening. We can look for a place that has a good Live band. And the Kenyan live band experience is beautiful. It has songs that include the Bongo of Kenya, and the Lingala of Congo. it has the Congolese and Kenyan music.

On our Day Four – Sunday.

The next day is a Sunday. You could start the day with church, this will help you enjoy the nice collection of Kenyan worship and then from there, we can start right where we stopped.

8. Nairobi National Museum.

Entry costing only 600 Shillings (18,000 Uganda Shillings) makes Nairobi National Museum welcoming and enjoyable. An impressive collection of Kenya’s history, culture, and natural heritage. The Museum hosts both temporary and permanent galleries that attract learners and tourists alike. The museum consists of the following permanent galleries: The Cradle of human kind gallery; The Story of mammals; The History of Kenya; Cycles of life gallery; Numismatic exhibition and Asian African Heritage exhibition gallery respectively.

9.  Karura Forest

And then after you’ve had this, then we can go to the Karura forest. The entrance fee is 3,000 Uganda Shillings (100 KES) and is $6 for the Non residents. The place is full of Scenic trails for people who love to walk.  A nice quiet place to sit and chat. You shall have a beautiful waterfall experience, waterfalls picnic sites and it’s just very close to the city.

The Karura forest is great for people who love to walk. If you like cycling, you can rent a bike at only 30,000 Uganda Shillings for two hours.

10. Two Rivers Mall

After such a thrilling adventure we go to Two Rivers Mall. Two Rivers Mall is a modern shopping complex offering various activities like bowling, go-karting, and zip-lining. There’s something for everyone, from shopping to fun entertainment. Go Karting starts 75,000 Uganda Shillings for 10 minutes. Zip lining is a 1,500 KES (50,000 Uganda Shillings). We have bowling. Which  is 25,000 Uganda Shilling per game. Among other services is the Cinema, a variety of shopping malls. Also available is the Ferris wheel which is 15,000 Uganda shillings. Every one is covered from children to adults.

Weekdays are least crowded as everyone is busy. So I would advise if you can push this to a Thursday or Friday, we can do this before having the WordCamp or between the WordCamps otherwise Sunday, everybody’s free and everybody would be coming for this place.

11. Forest Adventure Center

Next up is the Forest Adventure Center. With Zipline, Paintball, Nature walk, Mountain biking, Footgolf, Archery and horse riding. To people who would love an adrenaline rush, this is the best place. The place is located exactly one hour from Nairobi city. Horse riding starts at 50,000 per hour.

After all these we are up to around 850,000 Uganda Shillings. This is on assumption that we don’t go for all events. It’s hard for a person to like all these activities. Also with the time frame allocated, one can not have all the activities. From there let’s add 100,000 Uganda shillings for all unaccounted costs of Uber, Bolt, Snacks, Road side foods among others.

12. Masai Market.

And finally, the Masai market. The Masai market is an Open-air marketplace featuring vendors selling colorful handmade jewelry, textiles & beaded bowls. It is a vibrant Marketplace, selling handmade Masai crafts, jewelry, carvings, Fabrics. It’s the perfect place to pick a souvenir as you plan on coming back to Uganda.

Conclusion

So I want to close up. I put together some travel tips to help us as we  travel. It’s beautiful. If you travel using an Uber or bolt among others.

• Travel in a group to help with security. Anything can happen to a solo traveler in an unknown land. Fear of getting lost or entering enchanted territory is top of the list
• It’s also cheaper if you travel as a group. It is safer when you travel in a group and avoid isolated places. All of us know that isolated places are bad for security.
• The local currency is the Kenyan Shillings however, most places will accept credit cards. But it is advisable and highly advisable to have some cash. And where you run short of cash, don’t worry; Mpesa got you covered.

From the moment WordCamp Nairobi 2024 was announced, I’ve been thinking about how I’m going to attend. One evening after work, I set aside time to gather all the information I’ll need to prepare for my trip—dates, times, travel plans, and more. Attending a WordCamp is an exciting opportunity for anyone in the WordPress community, whether you’re a developer, blogger, designer, or entrepreneur. As a Ugandan, traveling is in my blood—I guess I’m a bit of a nomad (laughs).

If you’re coming from outside Kenya, here are a few things you need to know to ensure your trip goes smoothly and successfully:

1.    Documentation (Identification)

Before you think about traveling, make sure you have all the necessary documents ready. This will help you avoid any hassles at the airport, immigration office, bus stops, road checkpoints, or anywhere else. Kenya takes security seriously, and there may be random checks, so always be alert.

Some of the documents you’ll need include: –

• Passport (Especially for non-East African states): A passport valid for more than six months beyond your stay.
• Visa: An entry visa valid for at least one week beyond your planned stay to avoid interruptions.

NOTE: In accordance to the East Africa Community Blog Members of the East African Community do not need a passport or visa for the WordCamp Nairobi 2024 or for any other reason. A valid National ID is sufficient. However, if you have a passport, be sure to get it stamped at the border.

2.    Transportation

There are several ways to get to Nairobi: 

• Flights: 

Many airlines fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (NBO), which is near the WordCamp Nairobi 2024 venue and the busiest airport in the region. Some flights may have long layovers, while others may have short or barely noticeable ones. all this greatly depends on your Booking and travel time

Flight times and costs vary depending on your departure point, as do the amenities provided on board. Be sure to read reviews and check comments before booking.  This is the home of the secrets

For Ugandans, flying to WordCamp Nairobi 2024 from Entebbe International Airport to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport is the fastest option, with flight durations ranging from 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Airlines such as Uganda Airlines, Kenya Airways, and RwandAir frequently operate on this route.

• Bus: 

Buses are ideal for East Africans and travelers from neighboring countries. This is a great option if you enjoy scenic travel and is also budget-friendly. Popular buses like Mash Cool, BusCar, Modern Coast, Simba Coach, and Mash Poa run regular routes between Kampala and Nairobi. 

The bus journey is usually overnight, with most buses leaving Kampala at around 4:00 PM and arriving in Nairobi around 6:00 AM. The same applies for the return Trip. The trip generally takes 12 to 15 hours, including stops for refreshments, quick meals, and leg stretching.

The cost of a bus ticket from Kampala to Nairobi ranges between $25 and $50, depending on factors such as the type of bus, seat, and seat position. Always ask at the booking office to ensure you book the right bus. This information is provided free of charge at booking offices.

To make the long journey more enjoyable, consider reading e-books, watching movies, studying the Bible, or simply getting some sleep to avoid fatigue. The journey to Busia or Malaba is during the day, while the trip through Kenya occurs overnight. 

TIP: To be comfortable, bring a neck pillow for support, a thick jacket (it can get really cold), and a power bank. Some buses have power outlets, but often only one slot per person. Bringing a power Extension Cable can help you charge multiple devices hence adding to the fun.

• Train: 

Trains are ideal for mostly people coming from Places with in Kenya and other Places covered by the Kenya Railway system. This is a great option if you are coming from areas from Mombasa to Nairobi

3.    Accommodation

This part took me hours of internet browsing! Where you sleep in Nairobi largely depends on your budget, booking time, and desired style of accommodation. WordCamp Nairobi attracts many attendees, so it’s important to book early. Nairobi offers a wide range of accommodation options, from luxury hotels to budget-friendly stays. Here are a few options to consider:

a)   Budget Residences:

There are plenty of guesthouses and hostels within walking distance of the venue—Daystar University, Nairobi Campus—at very affordable rates.

b)   Mid-range: 

Nairobi has many affordable hotels in Westlands, Kilimani, and surrounding areas. These neighborhoods are well-connected to the city center and the WordCamp Nairobi 2024 venue. 

• High-end (Luxury): 

Nairobi is home to several luxury suites and hotels, offering ultimate comfort and great value for money. Some are so close you can view the WordCamp Nairobi 2024 venue from your bedroom window. 

• Bookings (Rental & Shared options): 

If you can’t find what you’re looking for, websites like Booking.com and Airbnb offer great alternatives. They connect you to residential options near the venue, catering to a variety of budgets—from low-end to luxury. These platforms are particularly useful for first-time travelers. 

4.    Event Ticket

WordCamp Nairobi tickets are very affordable compared to other tech conferences. This year, tickets cost $15 for the General Pass and $50 for the Micro-Sponsor Ticket. There’s really no excuse not to attend!

The General Pass grants you access to meals, speakers, tracks, networking sessions, panels, keynotes, and interactions with facilitators from around the world.

5.    Health Requirements

Currently, the most important health requirement for inbound and outbound travel is the Yellow Fever vaccination, along with the COVID-19 vaccination. While COVID restrictions are not as strict, be sure to carry your Yellow Fever vaccination card alongside your passport or ID.

If you have known health conditions, it’s a good idea to travel with a doctor’s recommendation, in case of an emergency. When I traveled to Wales, I was advised to attach my emergency contact details to the back of my passport, including the following information: 

• Emergency Contact 
• Name 
• Email 
• Phone 
• WhatsApp

This ensures that, in case of an emergency, people know how to respond. Don’t forget to carry any necessary medications, as Kenyan pharmacies might stock different brands than you’re used to.

6.    Money

Kenya’s official currency is the Kenyan Shilling (KES), and the notes are bilingual in English and Swahili. While it’s easy to exchange currency in Kenya, it’s advisable to convert some money before you travel—USD is the most commonly accepted foreign currency. 

Kenya is moving towards a cashless economy, and mobile money systems like M-Pesa are widely used— even motorcyclists accept it! ATMs are also available across the city, allowing you to withdraw Kenyan Shillings if needed. Still, it’s a good idea to carry some cash with you just in case.

7.    SIM Card

Getting a SIM card in Nairobi is easy and affordable, costing between $0.50 and $2, depending on where you buy it. Having a local SIM will give you access to both mobile data and mobile money, making your stay in Nairobi much smoother. Read this Guide on how to get a Kenyan Simcard

8.    Networking Essentials

WordCamp events are all about learning and networking. To get the most out of the event, here are a few essentials to bring along:

• Business Cards: Bring plenty of business cards to share with potential clients, collaborators, and mentors.  These cards come in handy during the networking events.  Who knows, your next client could be in the group.
• Devices: Ensure you have your laptop, smartphone, and/or tablet ready for taking notes and participating in the workshop sessions. Devices can be very disappointing when it comes to power usage, to be on a safe side don’t forget to bring your power bank and charger!
